While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them (Luke 2:6-7).
I’ve had the opportunity to be a member of many church families throughout my days as a Pastor’s child. Each church has a unique tradition regarding its Christmas Eve program and it’s been such a blessing to attend each one. Some churches have their children’s pageant while others participate in a traditional worship service complete with a sermon and a few hymns. My home current church home has a come-and-go, one on one communion with our Pastor.
No matter the type of service, being present in The House of the Lord on Christmas Eve always brightens the holiday. My daughter’s first Christmas was more special than any before. I remember sitting in the pew and, as the song, ‘Mary Did You Know?’ was sung by the choir, I broke down crying. Never before had I viewed Christ’s birth with the eyes of a Mother.
Why Mary didn’t need to know ……
Mary may have swaddled a thousand babies in her young life but this was the first time tending to her own. It was unnecessary for her to know Jesus was the son of God or to have insight into His last day at Calvary. She simply treasured the scent of a newborn as she cradled Him close to her heart and placed Him gently in the manger.
A Mother’s love is unconditional. A Momma Bear’s protection is essential for a young cub to survive. Christ’s birth gives us a glimpse of the vast love our Heavenly Father bestows upon us. Let us focus on the love of God this Christmas season and praise His name for sending Jesus to redeem us from our sins.
Dear Father, thank You for sending Jesus! We look forward to celebrating His birth on Christmas and we praise Your name for gracing us with unconditional love. Amen.
