John 1: 1-5
The light sines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5).
A few weeks back, we had a terrible storm. A tornado passed through during the night and caused quite a ruckus just past our backyard. Our house shook a little and pressure slightly filled our ears. We jumped into closets before the power went out as the storm snapped electric poles like toothpicks.
It became strangely quiet in the darkness.
I pulled out a few of my Great grandmother’s oil lamps, and slowly lit them to produce a simple glow. My seven year old had never seen anything like that before. Memorized he stretched his hands around the glass chimney, fluttering them like a wizard as he asked, ‘Mommy, what kind of magic is this?” His fear subsided when he saw the soft glowing light in the pitch black.
John describes Jesus as a light in the midst of darkness. Man’s hearts had become blackened while wandering hopelessly in the shadow of sin. Jesus came along to overcome that darkness and provides a light will never be extinguished.
Life deals us some incredibly dangerous storms. We are all sinners walking in the shadow of this broken world but we are not hopeless. Christ’s light shines before us, never to be extinguished.
Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to brighten our darkest days and hopeless nights. We have comfort in the light of Your everlasting love. Amen
