3 Reasons I don’t Make New Year’s Resolutions

I’m jealous of people who stick to their guns and maintain their New Year’s Resolutions for a whopping 365 days! I stopped wasting my time dreaming up resolutions because they are usually unrealistic, completely dreadful and destined for failure. Check out these three perfectly good reasons I chose NOT to make New Year’s resolutions!

My New Year’s Resolutions Were Unrealistic

First of all, I always set extremely unrealistic goals for the new year. Working out every day is a perfect example. I can make it to the gym MOST days, but not EVERY day due to my Stay at Home Mom Routine and Work from Home Schedule. Others may be able to work in ‘gym time,’ but I can’t because I simply don’t want to. I wish I wanted to, but I don’t; thus making it an extremely unrealistic resolution. None of us like to do anything when it fills us with dread.

My New Year’s Resolutions Filled Me with Dread

Most of my resolutions consisted of making lifestyle improvements I should probably be making anyway. Lets take eating healthy for example. I dread eating healthy, not because I don’t like leafy greens but because I do like pizza and bread sticks better. I’m 100% obsessed with pizza and I’m going to have it every Friday during our Family Movie Night. When it comes to making a resolution to eat healthy, I dread the thought of Friday rolling around. I can’t chalk it up to a weekly cheat day because I’ve technically broken my resolution. We have to admit, when we break our resolution, no matter the reason, it has the possibility to make us feel like a failure.

My New Year’s Resolutions Were Destined to Fail

Setting unrealistic resolutions, like the ones above, filled me with dread because they were destined to fail. Even if I get to the gym everyday and avoid pizza at all costs, one day in 365 days, I WILL crack! It makes no difference if there’s a good reason or not, I feel like I’ve failed the whole resolution thing. Failing has a tendency to make all of us feel a bit worthless and just plain gloomy.

We don’t want to feel worthless or gloomy over a silly resolution we make once a year.

Try This Instead

We can absorb scripture daily and ask God how He intends to change us for the better. We are not in control of anything anyway so it’s best to leave the changing decisions up to our Lord and Savior. He’s proved to have the best plan in store for our lives, time and time again. The Holy Spirit will guide us to discover changes that need to be made.

And I will give you a new heart and a new spirit, I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you , and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
